Sophia’s Diary founder Andrea Krase on what inspired her to launch an online platform for parents

After having my second child, I found it harder finding things that would please both my children together – and which were also affordable.

I did many online searches but often turned up to groups that were not running any more, or my children did not enjoy. I had the idea of logging all my real, first-hand mummy findings and fantastic things to do as a ‘diary’. I built and launched a website on my own and showcased them publicly on social media to parents so they gained an insight before they spent money. Wouldn’t this also help small independent local businesses too?

Four years on, Sophia’s Diary (named after my daughter) has 32,500 annual online visitors, a family-focused magazine distributed to 10,000 families, plus more than 8,000 followers on various social media channels.

Feedback from users has provided me with so much happiness. Parents often state that their child now has a new hobby, they had a fantastic weekend, or their child had the best birthday party thanks to one of our party planners. They use Sophia’s Diary to find what they need.

From a business perspective, we are an extremely affordable platform. Free monthly events are organised for members to meet and forge relationships. Opportunities and long-term collaborations have been formed.

The biggest event of the year is our awards night. The purpose is to celebrate success and hard work. At our 2019 event more than 17,000 people voted and our winners were presented their awards in front of the 220 people who attended. The best moment of the evening was when David Taylor, the founder of brain tumour charity In Sue’s Name, was presented with an award by Mayor of Enfield Kate Anolue for ‘member of the year’. He is such a passionate and hard-working man, determined to raise £1million after losing his daughter. The event raised £800 for In Sue’s Name and Haven House Children’s Hospice.

I truly love the community I have set up through Sophia’s Diary; helping local parents, businesses, schools and charities. Our only goal is for this to continue!
