The Salvation Army is supporting 250 low-income families in both Edmonton and Enfield this Christmas
The Salvation Army in Edmonton is urgently appealing for people to donate small turkeys and other food items for Christmas hampers that will be given out to struggling families.
The charity is supporting 250 low-income families in both Edmonton and Enfield this Christmas – more than double the number of people the church helped last year. Referrals come in various ways including from local schools, social services and Enfield Council.
Next week, families will receive toys generously donated by the public for The Salvation Army’s Christmas Present Appeal at the church. Edmonton Salvation Army is also making up Christmas food hampers which, among other items, have ingredients for a full Christmas dinner included.
However, due to the rise in need the church is running short and urgently needs approximately 100 turkey breast joints by next Tuesday (17th) as families are set to receive the hampers and toys the following day. Additional food items such as tinned vegetables, pasta and rice will be included in the hampers, so people have something to eat in the days after Christmas.
Edmonton Salvation Army church leader Glenn Roden said: “Thank you so much to all the people and local businesses who have helped us support families in Edmonton and Enfield by donating toys and food items to our Christmas appeal.
“However, as more people have been referred to us this year we are struggling to meet the demand. We would be so grateful if people or businesses would consider donating turkey breast joints or other food items for our hampers to help the families we support to have a happy Christmas.”
Anybody who would like to drop off a donation for the Christmas hampers at Edmonton Salvation Army can do so on Monday 16th or Tuesday 17th December. The church is located at 339 Fore Street in Edmonton Green and will be open from 8.30am–1.30pm on those days. Alternatively, people are welcome to make a donation via JustGiving.
Other weekly activity at Edmonton Salvation Army includes a parent and toddler group (term time only) and a coffee morning. There is also a baby bank that runs every Monday and Tuesday by appointment only, and is supported by donations from the public and local branch of Asda.
