Ian Barnes is looking to make a political comeback later this month
A former deputy leader of Enfield Council is among six people standing in an Edmonton by-election at the end of November.
Ian Barnes is the Labour Party candidate for Jubilee ward and will be hoping to retain the seat for his party after former leader Nesil Caliskan stood down last month.
Caliskan became an MP for Barking at the July general election and resigned as council leader in August.
Barnes was previously a councillor for Winchmore Hill between 2018 and 2022. He served as Caliskan’s deputy for three years from 2019 and led on the introduction of two low-traffic neighbourhoods in Palmers Green and Bowes Park.
At the general election, Barnes attempted to become a Labour candidate in Coventry but failed to be selected.
Barnes will be coming up against five contenders on Thursday, 28th November, including candidates for the Tories, Lib Dems, Greens, Reform UK and one independent standing on a left-wing platform.
A full preview of the by-election, including statements from each of the candidates, will be published by the Dispatch later this month.
The deadline to apply to be registered ahead of the poll is midnight on Tuesday, 12th November. The deadline to apply for a postal vote is 5pm on Wednesday 13th and, for a proxy vote, the deadline is 5pm on Wednesday 20th.
