Enfield Council is proposing three new ‘school streets’ to add to the 20 it has already installed around the borough.

School streets are areas near school entrances that are turned into zones for walking and cycling zone during pick-up and drop-off times on weekdays during the school term.

The council says the schemes boost safety for pupils as they arrive and leave, improve air quality, and encourage young people to walk, cycle or scoot to school.

On its website, the council adds that school streets “empower people in Enfield to make sustainable choices for themselves, their community and our planet”.

The three new school streets are proposed to be sited at Chesterfield Primary School in Chesterfield Road, Enfield Lock; Latymer All Saints Primary School’s adjoining roads of Granham Gardens and Dunholme Road in Edmonton Green, up to the junction with Northern Avenue; and Prince of Wales Primary School in Salisbury Road, Enfield Lock.

Enfield’s first school streets were introduced in 2020 and the scheme has largely been recieved positively. The new school streets will be enforced by automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras, but residents living within the zones are eligible for an exemption from the restrictions.

A public consultation is now running on the three new school streets and will end on Sunday, 7th January.

Residents, businesses, school staff, parents and any other stakeholders can send comments via email or by using an online survey available on the council’s Let’s Talk Enfield consultation website:
