A Metropolitan Police officer has been charged with driving offences after a moped rider was killed in Southbury last year.

Following an Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) investigation into the fatal collision on 12th October 2023, in which 26-year-old Cristopher De Carvalho Guedes suffered fatal injuries, police constable Ian Brotherton, aged 32, has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving and causing death by careless or inconsiderate driving.

According to the IOPC, the incident in Southbury Road took place when Brotherton drove a marked police vehicle through a red light on the way to an emergency callout, before colliding with Cristopher. The police vehicle’s lights and sirens were activated at the time.

The IOPC investigation began following a mandatory referral from the Met Police. At the conclusion of its investigation in April, a file of evidence was referred to the Crown Prosecution Service, which has now authorised the charges.

Cristopher had emigrated to London with his wife around a month before he was killed. Originally from the town of Gama near the Brazilian capital Brasilia, Cristopher had found a job in London as a delivery rider. He was with his cousin Wanderson Alves at the time of the incident, but Alves was uninjured.

Cristopher was a keen football player, representing local club Paranoa as a junior. He also enjoyed delivering sermons at Restituicao Gama.
