The markings at a junction in Southbury are now almost invisible

Enfield Council claims it is “investigating” a junction in Southbury with faded road markings – almost a year after it was alerted to the issue.
The markings at the junction where Crown Road splits into two roads, east of Enfield Retail Park, have now been worn down to such an extent they are almost invisible.
One driver complained to the council almost a year ago that the lack of visible road markings had almost caused a head-on collision, when a vehicle that should have given way instead went straight through the junction.
Regarding the incident in October 2024, Gary Stock said: “As we drove east and were about to go round that bend, a car from the junction straight ahead was heading towards the junction. It was only my driving experience and anticipation that made me cover my brake because he didn’t appear to be slowing down.
“And thank god I did, as the other vehicle just drove straight across the junction – I literally slammed my brakes on and his car had already passed in front of ours.”
Gary said he realised that the junction’s markings had almost completely faded, so he raised this with the council, but is still waiting for a response now almost a year later.
He continued: “I explained in the complaint that any driver who may not know that section of road, could easily think the straight section of that road from east to west has the right of way – if there are no visible markings to see.
“It shouldn’t be left until a member of the public has to complain that they have narrowly avoided a head-on collision, to prompt the council to repaint the road markings as a matter of urgency.”
Asked to respond, a council spokesperson said: “We carry out regular inspections and maintenance of public roads and pavements across the borough. Where a reported issue poses a serious safety risk, we aim to carry out repairs within 24 hours. For other cases, we aim to investigate within ten working days.
“We are currently investigating the missing road markings on Crown Road in Southbury, and any necessary works will be scheduled accordingly.
“We appreciate residents taking the time to report issues, helping us keep our streets safe and well-maintained.”
