Edmonton MP Kate Osamor looks set to return to the Labour Party after media reports suggested her three-month suspension is set to be lifted.

The Independent newspaper reported this morning (Thursday 25th) that the Labour leadership would be reinstating Osamor shortly.

This would mean the borough once again has three Labour MPs, with Enfield Southgate MP Bambos Charalambous also having his suspension ended earlier this month.

Osamor was suspended by Labour in January for stating in a newsletter that Israel’s attacks on Gaza should be added to a list of genocides to be remembered on Holocaust Memorial Day.

Although Osamor quickly apologised for the remarks, several leading Jewish groups criticised the comments and the Edmonton MP had the Labour whip in parliament taken away two days later.

Reaction locally to Osamor’s suspension was mixed with her own constituency party passing a motion of ‘no confidence’ in her which stated that Labour members in Edmonton “strongly condemn” the newsletter sent by Osamor and said it was “deliberately hurtful towards our Jewish community”.

But there was also sympathy for Osamor with the Labour leadership accused of singling out left-wing MPs for harsher punishments than those more politically aligned to Keir Starmer.

A pro-Palestine group held a rally in Edmonton Green to show support for Osamor and said that she was “an exceptional MP and a champion for her constituents” who “has also been an advocate for human rights, including a stand for a ceasefire and the cessation of the government’s arming of Israel in its killing of Palestinian civilians”.

They added: “Kate’s stand on these matters are in accordance with the wishes of many of those she represents.”

Osamor has declined to comment on the news that she is about to be reinstated by Labour.
