The Spin has won the award for ‘best Irish feature film’ at the Dublin International Comedy Film Festival
Two Enfield filmmakers who launched their own independent film company are celebrating the success of their debut feature.
Producers Isi Ismail and Jake Jacovides have been friends since they met at Winchmore School over 45 years ago and today are big supporters of Enfield Town FC. With financial backing from fellow Towners the pair premiered their heartwarming comedy film The Spin last autumn at Belfast Film Festival.
The film quickly garnered acclaim, winning the award for ‘best Irish feature film’ at the Dublin International Comedy Film Festival.
Set against the backdrop of the beautiful Irish landscape, the story is a “celebration of warmth, gentle humour, friendship and self-discovery”. It follows a road trip by a pair of best friends, who together encounter a nun, a stripper, a stuffed fox and an angry chicken before “putting their bromance to the test”.
Isi said: “It’s a thrill to be involved in a creative project like The Spin with Jake. The film is primarily about friendship, so we can easily relate to the characters’ experiences. In our case, Jake is probably the sensible one!
“We are delighted that it is receiving such acclaim; it seems like a wild dream compared to when we were just fooling around in Mr Brown’s maths class at Winchmore School.”
The Spin features a talented cast including Tara Lynne O’Neill (Derry Girls), Owen Colgan (Hardy Bucks), Brenock O’Connor (Game of Thrones) and Leah O’Rourke (Derry Girls), alongside Kimberly Wyatt from the Grammy-nominated girl group The Pussycat Dolls and TV presenter, model and social media star Maura Higgins.
The film was directed by award-winning director and screenwriter Michael Head and written by Colin Broderick, with Isi and Jake acting as co-producers. It is based on an original short story by songwriter and musician Mark McCausland, who also composed the film’s original soundtrack.
The Spin continues to gain momentum and has secured coveted spots at international film festivals including Toronto, Chicago, Rome and Bremen.
Director Michael said: “The Spin is indeed a charming tale of friendship, but more than this, the film is a celebration of Ireland, its people, its culture, and the craic. It’s a film that hopes to spread joy and positivity in a way that only true friendship can.”
