Plans are now being developed on how a £12m award from the Levelling Up Fund announced last year will be spent
Enfield Council is developing plans to spend £11.9million of ‘levelling up’ cash to help improve Angel Edmonton after the funds were finally released by the government.
The award from the previous Conservative government’s Levelling Up Fund was announced a year ago but the cash has only now been transferred to the council following last month’s budget, with eleven “transformative” projects now being developed in collaboration with the community.
Overall plans for Upper Edmonton ward support a new vision for the area, with an aim to make Angel Edmonton town centre a place for “learning new skills, experiencing culture and connecting with local communities”. Housing delivery and improvements to public spaces and safety will be supported by the projects, the council says.
The programme funded by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government also focuses on improving public transport and active travel, health and wellbeing, and community infrastructure.
Angel Edmonton has also recently been the focus of investment from the Mayor of London’s Good Growth Fund, which has supported projects including the opening of Angel Yard, a hub for small businesses and local entrepreneurs.
Last week, council leader Ergin Erbil and cabinet member for placemaking Sabri Ozaydin met with businesses at Angel Yard, representatives from the Greater London Authority, operating partner Launch It, and architect Hilary Satchwell. Hilary is part of City Hall’s ‘town architects’ programme and is providing placemaking, design and community engagement advice to the council.
Cllr Ozaydin said: “This investment marks a strong commitment to the future of Angel Edmonton, laying the foundation for a thriving, inclusive, and resilient community. By creating new jobs, encouraging active travel, and fostering an inclusive and resilient local economy, we are building a future for Angel Edmonton where everyone can thrive.
“This initiative is a testament to the council’s dedication to improving the quality of life for all residents and ensuring that Angel Edmonton continues to grow and prosper.”
