Around 200 people joined Saturday’s march in protest at Israel’s continued bombing of the region

Around 200 people took part in a march through Edmonton calling for a ceasefire in Gaza.
On Saturday (20th) local pro-Palestine groups including Enfield Solidarity with Palestine, Enfield Palestine Solidarity Campaign and Enfield Stop the War – collectively calling themselves the ‘Enfield Movement for Palestine’ – took to the streets to add their voices to national calls to stop arming Israel’s government as it bombs Gaza, where there are growing fears over an unfolding humanitarian crisis.
More than 39,000 Palestinians have been killed by Israel’s attacks on Gaza, including 15,000 children, since the war began on 7th October in response to the Hamas-led terror attacks in Israel, which killed more than 1,000 Israelis.
Saturday’s march also included a model of the ‘Jenin Horse’, which had been an artistic sculpture in the West Bank city of Jenin, using scrap metal and pieces of wrecked cars destroyed during an Israeli invasion, but which was itself destroyed by Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) troops last October.
Describing Saturday’s march, a spokesperson for the Enfield Movement for Palestine said: “About 200 Enfield women, men and children, from all ethnic backgrounds and faiths, representing different groups including Jews for Justice, marched from Edmonton Green Station to Silver Street Station.
“The march was a great show of local strength and the support along Fore Street was magnificent, with passers by joining us, chanting with us and loving the drumming. Better still, as we marched down Fore Street, Tottenham Palestine Action marched up Tottenham High Road and, with perfect timing, we joined together in loud solidarity in the middle of the North Circular Road before turning into Pymmes Park for our rally.
“The speeches were great, the poems stirring, the singing superb and the protestors vocal. Health Workers for Palestinians deservedly got a big round of applause. A special mention must be given to a British/Palestinian woman from Enfield who read movingly from her grandmother’s diaries written decades ago about the Nakba when thousands of Palestinians were driven off their land.

“But another highlight was the Jenin Horse! It wheeled magnificently into Pymmes Park having guided the protestors along the North Circular […] a UK volunteer was determined the Jenin Horse should live on, so he created another horse to tour the UK at protests such as our Enfield and Tottenham rally. This beautiful horse, trundling through Pymmes Park gates, brought with it a wave of love, solidarity and strength from the resistance in Palestine to the resistance in Enfield and Tottenham.”
Enfield Solidarity with Palestine holds public meetings, marches, fundraisers, films, vigils and children’s events and has recently launched a petition to Enfield Council calling on the local authority to divest its pension fund from companies involved in arming the Israel government.
