Four bus routes are being diverted as the latest works for Enfield Council’s district heating network get underway

Drivers and bus passengers are facing significantly longer journeys for over a month as the latest major roadworks connected to Enfield Council’s district heating network get underway.
A northbound section of Hertford Road in Edmonton Green, just to the south of Bury Street, is now closed to all vehicles and will not reopen until September.
It means most vehicles are being diverted along Church Street, Balham Road and Croyland Road before re-joining Hertford Road via Bury Street, while heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) are being diverted all the way around the A10.
Four bus routes heading north from Edmonton Green – the 192, 279, 349 and 491 – are all on diversion as a result. The 192 towards Enfield and 491 towards Waltham Cross are both diverting via the A10 and Bury Street; the 279 to Waltham Cross via the A10 and Southbury Road; and the 349 to Ponders End via Montagu Road and Nightingale Road.
The roadworks are to enable new pipes to be installed by Energetik, a council-owned company setup to create a district heating network in Enfield by utilising waste heat from the incinerator at Edmonton Eco Park. Major roadworks along Hertford Road specifically have been taking place on-and-off for two years.
However, this summer’s roadworks are more disruptive than usual, with Energetik opting to close the entire northbound carriageway rather than using temporary traffic lights to maintain a two-way flow, as has been done previously.
