The Metropolitan Police has opened a murder investigation after an 18-year-old was shot dead in Enfield last night (Thursday 26th).

At around 8.45pm police were called to the A10 Great Cambridge Road, between Bush Hill Park and Southbury, following reports that gunshots were fired.

Met officers attended the scene alongside paramedics, who treated an 18-year-old man for gunshot wounds before taking him to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

A spokesperson said: “Police have launched a murder investigation, and are currently carrying out fast-time enquiries. At this early stage, there have been no arrests. A crime scene is in place and the road will remain closed while enquiries are carried out.

“If you know anything, then please get in contact with police by calling 101 giving the reference 8393/26JUN. You can also call the independent charity Crimstoppers on 0800 555 111 to remain anonymous.”

Detectives have this afternoon been seen combing the scene of the shooting, which is a residential road running parallel to the A10 and is opposite Morrisons Supermarket. They are also going door-to-door to speak to residents and obtain doorbell footage of the incident.

Residents also told the Dispatch they believed the shooter was riding a bike at the time of the shooting and that the victim was being “chased” down the road.

The location of the shooting is only a short walk from Ayley Croft Estate, where a woman was stabbed to death in April and where an 18-year-old was also killed in 2022.

Update (4.30pm):

Detective Chief Superintendent Caroline Haines, who leads policing in Enfield, said: “I am saddened to hear that a young man lost his life last night. My thoughts are with his family and friends who will be processing this news today.

“I would like to send my thanks to the community now, as there will be an increased police presence while we carry out enquiries over the next few days. Your patience is greatly appreciated.

“An incident like this is deeply concerning to members of the community, and we recognise that some may feel effected. Please do approach any of our officers who are in the local area, they will be happy to provide support to you.”
