The public front counter at Edmonton Police Station will begin its new, reduced opening hours from next week.

Starting on Tuesday (3rd), the police counter in Fore Street, Edmonton Green, will no longer be available 24 hours per day.

Instead it will be open from 10am-10pm on weekdays and 9am-7pm on weekends.

Anyone who wants to report a crime in person outside of these hours will need to travel to Charing Cross Police Station in central London.

The changes are being introduced to cut costs for the Metropolitan Police Service, which is facing a £260million funding gap. Some other police front counters in London are being closed completely, and only 27 will be remaining in total once the changes are made.

The Met had previously announced last summer that both Edmonton and Tottenham police stations would be among those closing to the public but, after a huge backlash, announced in October that it had scaled back its closure plans.

Since 2012, reports made at front counters have dropped by 60%.

A Met spokesperson said: “We’re adapting to how Londoners engage with us. These changes help us to focus our resources on where communities need us most – visible, local policing that keeps our streets safe.”

Crimes can also be reported online by visiting the Met Police website and by phone by calling the non-emergency number 101. In an emergency, always call 999. For hearing or speech-impaired users, text 18000 to access the Met’s textphone service.
