In our latest councillor’s column, Labour councillor Nawshad Ali highlights his work in the ward

As someone who has spent many years helping people from different backgrounds in our community, I have seen the challenges many of our residents face.
That is why I decided to get involved in politics. I want to make sure everyone’s voice is heard, and to work for fairness, equality, and opportunity for all.
I joined the Labour Party because I believe it stands for social justice and supports working people. In 2022, I was proud to be elected as councillor for Carterhatch ward. Since then, I have worked hard to serve our community and support local residents with the issues that matter most.
On Enfield Council, I’ve taken on several key roles, including chair of the finance scrutiny panel and chair of the housing and regeneration scrutiny panel. I also serve as vice-chair of the overview and scrutiny committee, and sit on the general purposes committee and the culture and environment scrutiny panel.
These positions have allowed me to advocate for residents and help shape better policies for Enfield.
Outside of my council work, I am a qualified accountant and currently work for the NHS. This experience helps me understand the pressure on public services and the need to use resources wisely to support those who need it most.
Locally, I have supported projects that make a real difference. One example is helping Enfield Rangers Football Club secure a long-term lease from the council. This gives the club stability and allows them to continue offering great opportunities for young people through sport.
Another recent success was saving Glyn Road Car Park. Alongside my fellow councillor Susan Erbil, we fought against plans to sell the site and we won. This showed that when we speak up, and work together, we can protect important community spaces. It also shows that the Labour-run council is listening to residents.
I also work closely with our dedicated Labour MP for Enfield North, Feryal Clark, and was proud to support her campaign that led to Carterhatch Primary School becoming the first in Enfield to receive free school breakfast meals.
This is a crucial step in ensuring every child gets the best start to their day and their education. I am grateful for her continuous support and partnership in driving positive change in our ward.
Looking ahead, my priorities remain clear: I will continue working to make Carterhatch safer and cleaner. I want every resident to feel supported, listened to, and proud to live here.
There is still more to do, but I believe that by working together, we can keep building a better future for Carterhatch.
