Enfield’s cardiac support group, Heart Throbs, is thriving but always welcomes newcomers. So, consider us and pass this article on to others who might need cardiac rehabilitation!

Our knowledgeable trainers push members a little harder than they think possible. Music adds to the fun hugely; the rhythm of golden oldies makes exercising positively enjoyable. The mixed classes provide a social stimulus as well.

Gradually, hearts strengthen and confidence too, even if you have been through a rough time due to a heart problem. Most of us have had similar experiences. The varied exercises also promote greater flexibility, balance and stronger muscles.

Our monthly socials boost enjoyment by providing varied entertainment and presentations. Family and friends are welcome to join us.

Guest speakers have included Paul Davies OBE, ITN’s chief war reporter on some of the most dangerous frontlines, such as the disintegrating Yugoslavia. His presentation showed huge empathy with the suffering civilians. The clarity and detail of his reports helped bring Slobodan Milosevic to justice. In Brighton his team were first on site after a bomb explosion killed five, narrowly missing Margaret Thatcher.

Photographer Robin Claydon presented beautiful photographs of orangutans in Borneo and outlined the awful dangers these animals face.

Antiques expert Paul Martin (not the TV one!) entertained us with many beautiful or unusual items and even assessed member’s’ own possessions, explaining why they may or may not be real ‘treasures’.

A truly enjoyable evening occurred in early May. Four members shared their personal VE Day experiences. The atmosphere was heightened with music from the era, some members dressing up and a lavish spread of party food. Our own ‘veterans’ are clear evidence that regular exercising with Heart Throbs really does keep you going!

We offer live classes on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, eight at Holtwhites Sports and Social Club in Enfield and one at St Stephen’s Church Hall, Bush Hill Park. Two classes are early evening; the others are in the morning. A Zoom class is also held each Tuesday and Thursday.

Our costs are very reasonable with no contract or joining fee. The monthly charge ranges from £30 to £45 depending on how many classes are done per week, with a reduction for couples. Our experienced trainers are all qualified in cardiac rehabilitation, cater for every person’s needs and keep a watch out for anyone overdoing their activities!
