Heartbreak for Enfield Town FC as club’s hopes of pulling off another ‘great escape’ come to nothing

Enfield Town FC have been relegated after a 0-0 draw today (Monday 6th) left the Towners unable to catch the teams above them with three games left.
Although back-to-back wins against Horsham and Farnborough in February had raised hopes that the Towners could pull off a repeat of last season’s ‘great escape’ from relegation, a run of poor results in March left the fan-owned club adrift near the bottom of the table.
For the past few weeks it had been looking increasingly likely that the National League South side would go down as Gavin Macpherson’s had only won one of their previous ten games.
Town’s fate was finally sealed with today’s draw against Hemel Hempstead, leaving the club ten points behind 20th-placed Farnborough with three games of the season remaining.
The Towners had memorably won promotion to the National League South for the first-time with a play-off final win against Chatham in May 2024.
But Macpherson is now expected to have a sit-down with the club’s hierarchy to discuss his future as they prepare for next season, when Enfield Town will be playing once again in the Isthmian League Premier Division.
In better news from non-league football this weekend, Cockfosters won their FA Vase semi-final against Punjab FC to book a place at Wembley for the final against AFC Stoneham on Sunday, 17th May.
