The sessions at Southbury Leisure Centre offer a safe, welcoming environment for local people living with dementia to enjoy the benefits of swimming, writes Finn Logue

New dementia-friendly swimming sessions have been launched in Enfield.
Enfield Dementia Network is hosting the sessions at Southbury Leisure Centre in partnership with Age UK Enfield and leisure operator Better.
They offer a safe, welcoming environment for local people living with dementia and their carers to enjoy the benefits of swimming and social connection.
The initiative is already making waves within the community. Stan, aged 97, took his first swim in years, which he described as “liberating and fun”. Another local resident, Pete, was supported by lifestyle manager Jan Sommers to make a long-desired return to the swimming pool.
“Pete’s smile said it all,” said Jan. “This session gave him something he’s dreamed of for years.”
The sessions are tailored to be inclusive and accessible, with trained staff and volunteers on hand to support participants in and around the water. The programme is part of a wider effort to make leisure activities more dementia-friendly across Enfield, promoting physical health, emotional wellbeing, and community inclusion.
Dominic Hall, community sports officer at Better, said: “We’re delighted to have dementia-friendly activities in Enfield. It’s absolutely vital that sports are inclusive and that everyone can enjoy later life through movement and connection.”
Alison Carter Albert, chair of Enfield Dementia Network, added: “Having a dedicated pool session has encouraged people to take their first steps back into the water—and it’s been truly inspiring.”
Swimming offers numerous physical and mental health benefits for individuals living with dementia; it promotes mental wellbeing by clearing the mind and participants often find it relaxing, which can lead to improved mood and reduced anxiety.
The sessions are open to anyone affected by dementia, including carers and family members.
