Enfield Cricket Club celebrates special season

James Quinlan from Enfield Cricket Club on a season which saw its teams lift three trophies

And, just like that, the cricket season has finished. Four months of competition over in, what feels like, a flash!

For us, though, it was a season of great success. After a decade without any silverware, much like the proverbial London bus, three trophies have appeared in one go! And, with some drama too.

Firstly, despite early signs of promise, our first eleven struggled in the second half of the season. We lost two key players and couldn’t recover our early season form, even while the form of our main rivals also faltered. It was a season of missed opportunities but lots of promise.

It was great to see the destructive form of our captain, Tony Sayers, plus the development of 16-year-old Tasin Iqbal at the top of the order. Also, the form of James Cormack towards the end of the season bodes well for next year. Bowling-wise, our spinners were excellent; Australian Zac Bayliss topped the tree with 40 league wickets, but we will be looking to strengthen our bowling department over the winter.

Despite the disappointment of a fourth place finish, there were real signs of growth and we look forward to pushing on next year.

For our second eleven, however, there was glory – albeit in the most nail-biting of fashions. In the penultimate game, we knew a win would see us promoted, but we didn’t perform and lost heavily. That meant we had to win the final game of the season, against the team that were top of the table. A win would mean not just promotion, but a league title.

In that decisive game, we bowled first and bowled well, holding our opponents to 150. With the bat, however, despite a decent start, we struggled to 94-7. Then, a rebuild – an eighth wicket partnership to steady the ship and slowly pull us towards the total. With the crowd (and nerves) building, Kian Linnane (41*) played calmly and confidently, before hitting the winning runs and beginning the title celebrations.

It was an unbelievable way to finish a great season.

On the same day, our third eleven were making hard work of their own title push. Needing just a point for the title, in the final game, we were bowled out for 125. And, when our opponents were 37-0, things looked a little dicey. But, an excellent spell of bowling from Adnan Zameer (4-17), ably supported by Anu Lekha (3-39) and Nick Jackson (2-13) dragged the threes back into it. With the fall of the sixth wicket with them on 94, we knew the title was ours. We eventually bowled them out for 110 and celebrated.

Our fourth eleven had the luxury of knowing they were champions already going into the final week of the season. An outstanding season had seen them crowned a week earlier, so the final week was a chance to mix the team up a little and give chances to squad members. In only their second season, the fours have grown into a very strong side, well led by Tom Simons, that provides an excellent stepping stone for our cricketers to get into adult cricket.

So, there you have it! After a decade of hard work and rebuilding, 2025 saw Enfield CC take home three league titles. Ahead now is a winter of taking the next steps and strengthening to compete at every level.

We look forward to 2026!
