Nicola Hyde from Age UK Enfield on how the charity can help people with care needs continue living at home
As people age, maintaining independence becomes a cornerstone of their wellbeing.
Home care services, like those offered by Age UK Enfield, provide invaluable support to individuals who wish to live their lives on their own terms for as long as possible. These services enable older adults, including those living with conditions like dementia, to stay in the comfort of their own homes while receiving tailored assistance that suits their unique needs.
In the last year, Age UK Enfield has supported nearly 150 older people in Enfield, but we know there are many more who could benefit. Our ethos revolves around promoting independence and celebrating later life.
This approach recognises the importance of empowering individuals to make their own choices, ensuring that ageing does not mean losing control over how and where people live.
For many, the prospect of leaving their home can be daunting, particularly for individuals living with dementia. These worries often extend to family members, who may feel overwhelmed by the challenges of care-giving. Home care services provide a solution that bridges the gap between independence and essential care, offering peace of mind to both individuals and their loved ones.
At Age UK Enfield we understand the complexities of dementia care. Our care team is trained to a Level 2 standard, ensuring they have the knowledge and skills needed to provide compassionate, effective support. Beyond hands-on care, they offer navigation services that provide families with guidance, additional resources, and advice tailored to their situation.
This specialised focus helps people with dementia retain a sense of dignity and control over their lives while ensuring their safety and comfort.
These services are designed to meet a variety of needs, whether someone requires a small amount of assistance or a more extensive care package. Age UK Enfield’s offerings are comprehensive, covering a wide range of activities that enhance daily life and alleviate the pressures of managing on one’s own.
Our key services include companionship, combatting loneliness and fostering meaningful connections; carer respite, offering family caregivers a much-needed break to recharge and meal support, providing assistance with preparing and serving meals, including visits at key mealtimes. Additionally we provide household help, offering support with shopping, light cleaning, and laundry; appointments and activities, including transportation and support for attending health appointments or pursuing hobbies and interests; medication assistance, ensuring proper management of medication schedules; and personal care, providing help with tasks like bathing, dressing, and grooming.
Venetta Hunt, Age UK Enfield’s head of dementia services, recognises that everyone’s needs are different. She said: “We offer flexible service packages which means care can be arranged for a minimum of three hours per week, with the option to split this time into smaller visits or opt for longer, consolidated sessions. For those needing greater support, additional hours can be arranged to suit individual preferences and requirements.
“Our services go beyond addressing practical needs – they play a vital role in boosting confidence, promoting emotional wellbeing, and reducing isolation. By supporting individuals in familiar surroundings, these services foster a sense of security and comfort, enabling people to enjoy life fully in their later years.”
