The veteran documentary maker was quizzed by sixth form pupils from Oasis Academy Hadley

Students from a Ponders End school were treated to an “unforgettable afternoon” when renowned documentary filmmaker and journalist Louis Theroux visited last week.
Oasis Academy Hadley in South Street welcomed Louis for a thought-provoking interview led by two sixth form students, Nahida and Huseyin.
The session, organised by the academy’s library reading champion Chloe Lebow, in partnership with the charity Futures For All, gave students the opportunity to engage directly with Theroux, whose career spans acclaimed documentaries for the BBC and Netflix exploring extremism, cults, racism, crime, and toxic online culture.
Known for his curiosity and empathetic approach, Theroux shared insights into the psychology behind controversial beliefs and behaviours.
During the hour-long interview, Nahida and Huseyin led a wide-ranging discussion. Theroux spoke candidly about his deep curiosity for people, sharing that he prefers asking questions over answering them. He emphasised the importance of authenticity and vulnerability, noting that being genuine, even awkward or unsure, has helped him build trust and uncover deeper truths in his work.
When discussing careers in media, Theroux encouraged students to value education and take initiative, warning against the illusion of shortcut success often promoted online. He highlighted the importance of mentorship, perseverance, and actively seeking out opportunities rather than waiting for them to arrive.
Nahida said afterwards: “Interviewing Louis was an experience I’ll never forget. It was really refreshing to speak to somebody that famous, but they still have that sense of humility.”
Huseyin added: “I think it was very transparent the way he gave advice about his outlook on life and for our futures as well.”
The session also included a light-hearted game of ‘Two Truths and One Lie’ and ‘Theroux the Keyhole’, where Louis competed for a deluxe hamper of his favourite biscuits, adding a playful twist to an inspiring afternoon.
Zoe Thompson, principal of Oasis Academy Hadley, said: “We were honoured to welcome Louis Theroux to our academy. His openness, humour and insight made a lasting impression on our students. It was a powerful reminder that empathy, curiosity and critical thinking are essential tools for navigating the world.”
Naomi Abou El Aala, associate director of Futures for All, said: “We are thrilled to work with Oasis Academy Hadley and Louis Theroux on this unforgettable experience for their students.
“Without the support of high-profile speakers and influential figures such as Louis, our work wouldn’t be possible. We encourage well known figures like Louis Theroux to engage with young people to help inspire the next generation.”
