The wooden work of art in Grovelands Park was damaged earlier this summer but has been restored thanks to a local carpenter

A local carpenter has been praised for fixing a vandalised work of art.
Earlier this summer a wooden sculpture of a heron in Grovelands Park was badly damaged, in what was thought to be a failed attempt to steal it.
The heron had been carved out of a tree and was fixed to the ground but “mindless vandals” had tried to rip it out and, in doing so, caused parts of the wood to split.
But now Scott Rampling, a park user and carpenter, has restored the sculpture and returned it to its rightful place in the middle of the park’s woodland.
Michael McDonagh, chair of the Friends of Grovelands Park group which helps look after the park situated between Southgate and Winchmore Hill, praised Scott for his efforts.
Michael said: “Our beautiful heron, that was carved out of a tree and had been installed in the wood near the Branscombe Bridge, was targeted by some mindless vandals, who used brute force to push it off the mounting causing the heron to fall on the ground and a parts of the design to break off and split.
“Happily, thanks to the skill and hard work of Scott Rampling, a skilled carpenter, the splits and damage have been carefully repaired and he has reset the heron back on to a firm concrete base covered with topsoil.
“Scott, who lives in Enfield visits the park to walk his dog and like all of us was disgusted when he saw the heron laying damaged on the ground. Kindly he gave up his time to carefully repair it and we at the Friends of Grovelands Park are most grateful to him for doing such an excellent job.”
