Chris Joannides will be growing his “chin whiskers” to raise money and awareness of annual cancer appeal
A Southgate councillor will be taking part in the annual ‘Movember’ campaign that sees men across the world pledge to give up shaving and help raise awareness of prostate and testicular cancer.
Chris Joannides will be “growing an outrageous moustache” during November while donating half of his monthly councillor allowance to the campaign and encouraging others to donate as well.
The Conservative councillor usually sports a neatly-trimmed goatee and moustache but is starting the month clean-shaven before growing out his facial hair throughout the next 30 days.
Movember was launched to help support men’s mental health and suicide prevention, as well as funding prostrate cancer and testicular cancer research projects.
Cllr Joannides said: “For the whole of November, I will be growing my fun moustache in support of Movember. Having begun shaving aged 14 it wont be a problem in growing my chin whiskers back quickly, while raising money and awareness for such a worthwhile cause.
“Prostrate cancer is the most common cancer for men in the UK, killing 10,000 a year and because it sometimes has no symptoms it can go undetected until it’s too late. I am proud to participate in Movember for the first time and support a great charity.”
