Andreas Georgiou previews all of the events taking place in Enfield in June to celebrate Pride

Pride has arrived! June is a month-long celebration with festivities supporting and celebrating the LGBTQ+ community nationwide.
The first Pride took place in London in July 1972. It was a protest organised by the Gay Liberation Front and the Campaign for Homosexual Equality and was an integral moment in LGBTQ+ history and arguably the catalyst in prompting the modern movement. Pride has evolved since then, adapting a dual purpose of remembering our rich history and the rights we had to fight for, along with protesting and advocating for the rights and equalities we are still yet to obtain.
There has been much discourse in the media recently regarding trans rights, with the UK Supreme Court ruling that the term “sex” in the Equality Act 2010 refers to biological sex at birth, not gender identity. This ruling has left many people in the trans community uncertain of the implications that may befall them. Pride this year is more important than ever, to show up, have fun, and most importantly, show solidarity.
Enfield has a thriving queer community and there is a lot to be excited for. There are a multitude of events being hosted at Dugdale Arts Centre (DAC) in Enfield Town. Starting on Saturday (14th) the Dugdale has partnered with Proud North London to host a queer performance event featuring a plethora of artistic expression which will explore how art forms such as burlesque, cabaret, comedy and drag have ‘long been spaces of liberation, resistance, and community’.
The fun continues at the DAC on Friday 27th from 6-7 pm with a queer performance titled ‘Harem of No One’. This event is set to see LGBTQ+ performers of Cypriot, Kurdish, Turkish and Swana (Southwest Asia and North Africa) heritage who will explore and discuss, along with community leaders, “how performance can be used to connect with cultural identities and build bridges between various communities”.
Also on Friday 27th, from 6-10 pm, the incredible Sadie Sinner, founder of the Cocoa Butter Club, will be hosting an event celebrating queer performers of colour.
The finale of the Pride events in Enfield is on Friday, 4th July, when DAC will host a meetup ahead of big Pride in London parade taking place the next day. This event is once again in partnership with North London Pride and will involve T-shirt making and sign painting while getting into the Pride spirit before going into London.
Whether you’re a part of the LGBTQ+ community or an ally, get stuck in with the fun and celebrate love and gender diversity in all its beautifully vibrant forms this month!
