Empowering Disability in Enfield is a new group formed by people with lived experience of disability

New local group Empowering Disability in Enfield (ED in Enfield) is inviting residents with lived experience of disability to its first coffee morning this month.
ED in Enfield is formed by ten passionate individuals who have a lived experience of disability, brought together through LocalMotion and united by a mission to ensure disabled people in Enfield are seen, valued and heard. We are determined to break down barriers and work with others to create positive change in the community.
The aims of the group are to raise awareness about the challenges disabled people face in Enfield; advocate for systemic change, making Enfield a fairer and more equitable place for disabled people; monitor, support, and advise on the services provided for disabled people in the borough.
The free coffee morning is taking place on Friday, 30th January, from 11am-1pm at Enfield Town Library’s community room. It is designed as a relaxed space for people with lived experience of disability to meet others, feel understood, and share what matters to them.
Themes for discussion include digital exclusion, hidden disabilities, care for disabled adults when parents are no longer around, and physical obstacles faced by physically disabled and visually impaired people. Attendees can also suggest topics for future sessions.
As a group we are committed to making our events accessible and we are founded on the Social Model of Disability, which recognises that people are disabled by society through inaccessible environments, unhelpful attitudes, or restrictive systems rather than by their impairments.
ED in Enfield’s goal is to remove these barriers to achieve equality, independence, and choice for all, and we invite those affected by disability in Enfield to attend the coffee morning, share experiences, and help shape the future for disabled people in the borough.
