Talented athletes across Enfield are being given an opportunity to enter a prestigious awards programme.

Previous recipients of the GLL Sports Foundation (GSF) Awards have included a gold medal-winning young skater trained in the borough, with GSF being the largest programme of its kind for independent athletes.

Every successful applicant is granted access to GLL’s 250 sport and leisure facilities across the country, including four leisure centres in Enfield. They are also given access to physiotherapy, lifestyle mentoring and mental health wellbeing support.

Ten-year-old ice skater Talia Tasou has been skating since the age of three and is one of the award’s previous recipients. Talia trains across Enfield leisure centres and, in 2025, her synchronised ice-skating team won the gold medal at the British Championships in Nottingham.

Talia said: “I am really grateful for GFS support, as I get to use the gym and studio facilities to help with my strength off the ice. I can also do extra training thanks to the funded sessions.”

Priority in terms of funding is given to Olympic and Paralympic sports, but applications are also considered from any sport recognised by Sport England – ranging from cheerleading to BMX riding.

Enfield has a record of sporting success recently, accumulating 17 medals at last year’s London Youth Games.

GSF-supported athletes have excelled in major competitions, winning over 162 Olympic and Paralympic medals and 146 Commonwealth Games medals. The GSF’s patron is former Olympic champion hurdler Sally Gunnell OBE. Previous holders of GSF awards include diver Tom Daley, swimmer Ellie Simmons and boxer Anthony Joshua.

The awards are open now and close on Friday, 20th February.
