For more than a century Cockfosters Football Club, based in Chalk Lane, has been woven into the fabric of our Enfield community, standing as a testament to what local sport can mean when people come together with passion and pride.

Over the years, the club has reminded us that football isn’t only about bright lights and big stadiums – it’s also about connection, belonging, and the volunteers who make everything possible.

I’ve been involved with Cockfosters FC for around five years now, and for the last two I’ve had the privilege of serving on the committee. That time has given me a front-row seat to see the immense effort it takes to keep a local club running.

What many don’t see on match days is the invisible army of volunteers behind the scenes, led by local chairman Vas Chiotis – marking pitches, repairing fences, washing kits, organising fixtures, managing youth teams, serving food and drink, and doing a hundred other little jobs that ensure the gates can open every Saturday. Without them, the club simply wouldn’t exist.

And that’s why supporting clubs like ours matters. Local football isn’t just sport – it’s a social hub, a safe space for young people, an inexpensive day out when times are hard and, for many, a second home.

When local residents turn up to games, buy a programme, have a cup of tea, a glass of wine, or bring their kids along to watch, they’re not just enjoying a match – they’re helping to secure the future of a community institution that has already survived more than 100 years.

This season has been one of the most exciting in Cockfosters’ long history. On the pitch, the first team is pushing hard for promotion, playing with a confidence and togetherness that reflects the spirit of the club as a whole. Even more thrilling is that we’re on a record-breaking run in the FA Vase, a national competition for clubs at steps five and six of non-league football, with a final played at Wembley Stadium.

On Saturday, 17th January, a fourth round tie at home against Crawley Down Gatwick will be the next chapter in the best cup run the club has ever enjoyed. The buzz around Chalk Lane is electric and there’s a genuine belief that this team can keep progressing and maybe, just maybe, make history – and get to Wembley.

Beyond the senior side, Cockfosters also run a thriving youth setup with teams across a large range of ages. For many local children, pulling on a Cockfosters shirt is their first experience of organised sport. The values they learn – teamwork, respect, perseverance – stay with them long after they’ve moved on.

As we celebrate a remarkable season and look ahead with optimism, one thing remains true: Cockfosters FC belongs to the community. Its success is our success. And with continued local support, there’s no limit to what this club can achieve in its next hundred years.
