Enfield Council has launched a consultation on new school streets projects designed to improve safety for children.

The six new projects would see roads near the schools temporarily closed to traffic at pick-up and drop-off times, helping to encourage walking and cycling and improve air quality.

The proposed locations for the new initiatives are: Bowes Primary School, Hazelwood School, Houndsfield Primary School, St James’ Church of England Primary School, St Mary’s Catholic Primary School and Wilbury Primary School.

Four of the school streets would use automatic number plate recognition cameras to deter motorists from entering. The remaining two, near St Mary’s and St James’, would use manual enforcement such as gates or barriers.

When school streets are operating, only those with a permit or exemption can pass through them, including residents who live within the zone and blue badge users.

The latest announcement follows the roll-out of 14 school streets across Enfield, with the measures attracting cross-party support. In its local election manifesto, the Labour group pledged to introduce 50 new school streets.

Residents can find more information on the proposals and give their feedback by visiting: https://letstalk.enfield.gov.uk/SchoolStreets

The consultation will run until Sunday, 19th June.
