Abatement notices have been issued to a landowner in Crews Hill after residents complained of a “toxic smell” emanating from a series of fires.

Over the past couple of weeks Enfield residents had reported “a strong plastic burning smell at night,” according to community group Love Your Doorstep (LYDS).

The council subsequently investigated the fires taking place in the area and has now confirmed that abatement notices have been issued, compelling the landowner to desist.

Several people have even blamed the fires for giving them sore throats, nausea and headaches.

While the council described the material being burned as “foliate”, LYDS posted on Facebook that “whilst foliage was being burned, there were also clear signs of other materials (including plastic/metal) from previous fires, which explains the toxic smell and black fumes”.

The location of the fires was reported to be near Burntfarm Ride, but the council has not named the person or business responsible.

A spokesperson said: “We have received several complaints of acrid burning in the area around EN2. The location was difficult to identify due to its remoteness and the fact that the burning was taking place during the late evening.

“The council’s enforcement team witnessed burning of foliate at Cuffley Brook, east of Burnt Farm Ride earlier this week. Council officers immediately requested for the fire to be put out, gathered information about who was involved and what was being burnt, and acquired the details of the landowners.

“Abatement notices have been served on all concerned.”

LYDS has been asking residents affected by the fires to report any health concerns they may have using an online form the group has created.
