TV cameras from Sky News even dropped into one school to film live reactions from students, reports Anna-Louise Adepegba

GCSE students across Enfield borough collected their results today (Thursday 20th) with some schools celebrating notable grade improvements, student achievements and even national media interest.
At Southgate School, this year’s results exceeded last year’s “by nearly every measure”. Pupils and staff celebrated a third of students achieving grades between seven and nine, which is credited to the students showing “resilience and determination”.
There was also an impressive 100% pass rate in chemistry and 99% pass rate in biology and physics at Southgate School.
Top student Leo Cashman achieved eight nines and one eight, while Dora Haeri received five grade nines and four eights, and Reuben Bairstow achieved six grade nines and two grade eights.
“These results have made every effort worthwhile,” said Reuben.
Samson Olusanya, Southgate’s new headteacher, said: “I am absolutely delighted with the performance of our pupils and staff. These exceptional outcomes reflect five years of high quality teaching, dedicated learning and the rich, rounded experience we strive to provide for every young person at Southgate School.”
At Lift Aylward, in Edmonton, the school highlighted the story of student Amy Li, who moved to England only two years ago but passed eight of her GCSEs, including one grade nine and two grade eights.
Other Aylward success stories include Salma Abukar, who achieved seven grade nines and two grade eights, and Jewan Mohammad with three grade nines, two grade eights, and two grade sevens.
Acting principal Lauren Savage said: “We recognise the families who have encouraged them throughout their journey. Our brilliant staff have played an important role in supporting and guiding our students. Most importantly, today is about celebrating our young people and looking ahead to the opportunities that await them.”
Meanwhile, Oasis Academy in Enfield Lock welcomed Sky News TV cameras this morning, with students sharing their success stories to a national audience. Enfield North MP Feryal Clark also visited the academy to congratulate students.

Oasis saw substantial increases in both top grades and overall pass rates this year. This includes a 16% increase in grades five and above, 30% increase in passes in humanities and, in Turkish, students achieved 69% more grade sevens and above. Distinction grades awarded in BTEC vocational courses also increased.
One pupil, Blessing, secured two grade sixes, five grade sevens and a standout grade nine in art. Another top student, Layla, also earned five grade nines and four grade eights.
Principal Emma Robinson said: “The improvements across so many of our diverse subjects and curriculum. It is a testament to the commitment of our staff, the support of families and, most importantly, our students. We look forward to seeing them build on these successes.”
Private school Mount House, in Hadley Wood, saw a massive 48% of all grades between seven and nine. Head Jon Cooper said: “These results are a powerful reminder that exceptional outcomes can be achieved by an all-ability cohort when every young person is known, valued and inspired to fulfil their potential. We have an intake that reflects the broad range of abilities and ambitions seen nationally. That is precisely why these outcomes are so impressive.”
Eve received ten GCSEs at grades eight and nine, while Reuben, Florence, Elin, Fred, Thomas, Annabel and Kasim received eight or more GCSEs at grades eight or nine.
Enfield Council’s careers service has been offering tailored telephone support for young people who want to discuss their next steps. They are encouraged to visit the council website for more information.
Chris Dey, the council’s cabinet member for children’s services, said: “Today, we celebrate the hard work and the amazing GCSE and BTEC results achieved by our Enfield students across the borough.”
He added: “On behalf of the council, we want to extend our congratulations for completing this milestone and like to wish every single one our pupils well in all their future endeavours.
“To our schools and teaching staff, thank you for the dedication you have shown throughout the year. Your commitment has shaped these results just as much as the students’ hard work.”
