A couple who have run a fruit and veg stall at Enfield Market for 38 years are saying goodbye to their customers for the final time today (Friday 11th).

Paul and Audrey North are retiring and handing over their popular stall to younger members of the family.

Speaking to the Dispatch this week ahead of their final shift, Paul said they had been running the stall for so long they had served three generations of some local families.

“The customers have been superb,” he said.

“We try to be competitive on price so people keep coming.

“The only thing that is hard is the weather, when it’s not good it affects us but people still come because they know we’re here.”

Paul and Audrey are now going to put their feet up for a few months before embarking on a cruise early next year. Paul said he would miss their “brilliant” customers “but not the early starts”.

Adam Spencer, Paul’s second cousin, will be taking over the running of the stall. Adam said: “I could never do it any differently because they are the best.”

Sue Attwood, chair of The Old Enfield Charitable Trust which runs the historic charter market in Enfield Town, said of Paul and Audrey: “I will miss them enormously. What is lovely is they are handing it over [to Adam]. They have been great supporters of the market.”
