Enfield Council has announced a “major expansion” of electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure in the borough.

The local authority says it is accelerating the installation of 1,000 new EV charge points across the borough in partnership with operator Char.gy, with chargers installed directly into streetlight columns.

The new charge points will be “low cost” according to the council, and designed for long-stay and overnight charging close to people’s home.

This is designed to benefit residents who do not have access to at-home charging, one of the biggest barriers to EV ownership.

Maria Alexandrou, the council’s cabinet member for environment, said: “One of my priorities is to speed up opportunities for electric vehicles charging in Enfield and finally, we have a significant offer for drivers.

“We know that access to convenient, affordable charging is key to helping residents make the switch to electric vehicles. By expanding our on-street charging network, we’re making EV ownership a realistic option for far more people. This is a major step forward in our ambition to support a more sustainable transport system in Enfield.”

In addition, new standalone EV chargers will be installed at five sites in the borough, replacing older equipment.

Residents can also suggest where they would like to see lamppost chargers by filling in an online request form.

This initiative forms part of the council’s wider programme which aims to ensure that every resident has shared access to an EV charger within a five-minute walk of their home.
