Smoking is biggest preventable cause of premature deaths in Enfield, accounting for 230 deaths a year

A new service to help residents quit smoking has been launched by Enfield Council.
‘Smoke Free Enfield’ is a local service from Solutions4Health, which provides “innovative and sustainable lifestyle and clinical services” and was commissioned by Enfield Council.
The comprehensive borough-wide stop smoking initiative can be accessed in several ways, including by phone, email, GP or pharmacy referral, or self-referral.
Initially, the campaign will focus on Edmonton due to the higher number of smokers who live in the area, but anyone living in the borough can refer themselves to the service.
Smoking is the greatest single preventable cause of health inequalities and premature deaths in Enfield, accounting for approximately 230 deaths a year. The estimated cost to the borough is £209m a year.
Government funding of around £2million to help run Smoke Free Enfield is being provided over five years.
Residents will be helped to quit smoking in various ways, including behavioural support, access to vapes, nicotine replacement therapy, medication prescribed by a GP, and one-to-one, group and online sessions with trained advisors.
Alev Cazimoglu, the council’s cabinet member for health and social care, cut a ribbon at Kirkisrak Community House in Ponders End to officially launch Smoke Free Enfield.
Cllr Cazimoglu said: “Enfield’s new stop smoking service will help to transform the lives of many in our community.
“The programme is not just about quitting smoking; it is about reclaiming healthier lives and brighter futures.
“The new service is free and is confidential and I would encourage residents to take advantage of the invaluable resources available. Together, we can continue to pave the way for a healthier Enfield.”
