Passenger ‘dragged along platform’ by train at Enfield Town Station

The Rail Accident Investigation Branch is looking into the incident in which a passenger got their hand trapped in the doors of a departing train

Enfield Town Station

A passenger was injured after getting their hand trapped in the door of a departing train at Enfield Town Station, it’s been revealed.

The incident at around 6pm on 17th July came when a passenger attempted to board a train as the doors were closing. This resulted in their hand becoming trapped in the closed doors of the train.

The London Overground train subsequently departed from the platform with the passenger’s hand still trapped in the doors, forcing them to run alongside the train, eventually losing their footing.

Passengers on the train alerted the driver, who then stopped the train and released the doors, allowing the passenger to free their hand.

According to a preliminary report by the government’s Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB), during the incident, the train travelled approximately 60 metres and reached a speed of 11mph. The passenger “sustained minor physical injuries and psychological distress” from the accident.

Having assessed the evidence which has been gathered to date, RAIB has decided to publish a safety digest, which means it will provide an assessment with lessons to be learned from the incident, to help avoid a repeat in future.
