Pet shop based in Crews Hill for half-a-century put up for sale

Now a nationwide chain, Jollyes first began life as a family-run Enfield shop in 1971

Jollyes in Theobolds Park Road, Crews Hill

A pet shop that has been open on the same site in Crews Hill for over half-a-century has gone up for sale.

Jollyes has been based in Theobolds Park Road since 1971 and was initially run for three decades by the McIntyre family, before being sold on around 20 years ago.

Today, the Jollyes brand is seen all over the UK with more than 100 shops, having expanded into many new areas in the last few years.

While the business itself is successful and was recently taken over by the same parent company which owns supermarket giant Asda – TDR Capital – the shop in Crews Hill was recently listed for sale.

Many other businesses in Crews Hill have been bought up by housing developers in recent years, after the area was first earmarked for Green Belt de-designation in 2021.

Crews Hill is well-known as a hub for horticulture with several garden centres operating there as well as other businesses including a reptile emporium and bird centre.

But Enfield Council earmarked Crews Hill for 5,500 homes in the latest version of its Local Plan, which happens to be facing examination this week and next from a government-appointed planning inspector.

There is no evidence to suggest Jollyes is being marketed specifically for housing development, as the online marketing page for the site makes no mention of this and is listed as a “retail premises”.

Jollyes could not be reached for comment.
