Free cancer awareness sessions now available for community groups, writes Emma Friddin from Healthwatch Enfield
Do you currently organise or attend a community group in Enfield or deliver services to local residents?
If you think people in your group would be interested in hearing about how they can reduce their risk of getting cancer, get in touch and book your group in for one of our free ‘Talk Cancer’ awareness sessions.
Our fully trained facilitators can visit groups of five or more to deliver a one-hour session to help your members learn how to reduce their risk of getting cancer; learn why early diagnosis is important; and learn about NHS screening programmes.
At the beginning of 2019 we spoke to more than 600 of you about your knowledge of cancer awareness. Half of you told us that you wanted to learn more about prevention awareness through face-to-face events in Enfield. We listened to your feedback – these sessions are the result.
Last year we worked alongside Enfield Council and Cancer Research to develop our Talk Cancer programme and deliver interactive cancer awareness sessions within the local community, just like you asked. Over the last few months we have travelled across the borough hosting Talk Cancer sessions and have been attending local community groups and social groups to help Enfield residents learn more about how to reduce their risk of cancer, the importance of early diagnosis and make sure they understand the value of the cancer screening programmes the NHS currently provides.
Feedback on our sessions so far has been positive, with almost all attendees reporting that the session helped them learn more about cancer, while also giving them the opportunity to ask questions and dispel any myths that they may have about cancer.
This year we want to make sure that all local community organisations in Enfield have the opportunity to attend a Talk Cancer session. So don’t miss out, book your session today! Dates are available until May 2020 and our fully trained facilitators will adapt our session to the needs of your group.
