Enfield Council is hosting a range of events aimed at raising awareness, challenging negative behaviours and preventing male violence against women and girls.

White Ribbon is the UK’s leading campaign “engaging men and boys in the fight against gender-based violence”. The awareness day is observed on 25th November and marks the beginning of 16 days of activism.

This year, the council is hosting a range of opportunities to engage with and educate the community. To start, the council hosted a conference on White Ribbon Day itself (pictured above), bringing together professionals and local organisations. The event was officially opened by Gina Needs, cabinet member for community cohesion and enforcement.

The conference also allowed women to share their personal experiences, foster collaboration and continue the development of strategies to address the root causes of male violence against women and girls.

Cllr Needs said: “Violence experienced by women and girls takes many forms. Some behaviours and words may seem ‘harmless’ but normalising them ignores the short and long-term effects on women and can lead to more extreme violence.

“Come and support White Ribbon Day by attending one of our youth centre or library events and help make a difference towards ending violence against women and girls.”

Residents are also encouraged to participate in various events during the next 16 days. They include a White Ribbon Day coffee morning on Wednesday (27th) at Enfield Town Library, 66 Church Street, from 10am-11.30am, which will offer a safe space for adults to discuss gender-based violence, hear from survivors and learn about available support services – register for the event by emailing [email protected].

Youth engagement events are also being held at Ponders End and Craig Park youth and family hubs with activities including creative, film and roleplay workshops, aiming to empower young people to voice their opinions on gender equality, understand their rights, and learn about healthy relationships.
