Galanthophiles from far and wide will be heading to Bulls Cross this weekend for the ‘Ultimate Snowdrop Sale’ at Myddelton House Gardens.

A firm fixture in the diary of many horticulturists, the annual event attracts hundreds of green-fingered gardening enthusiasts and collectors in anticipation of seeing and purchasing a range of beautiful, and in some cases, very rare varieties of Galanthus bulb, commonly known as snowdrops.

They are heralded as one of the earliest harbingers of spring and have delicate, bell-shaped winter flowers that bloom as early as January or February, defying the prevailing weather conditions. While prices for bulbs start from around £5, the rarest variants could fetch hundreds or even thousands of pounds.

This year’s event also boasts a lecture delivered by renowned plantsman Joe Sharman, known as ‘Mr Snowdrop’, one of the UK’s leading breeders of snowdrops and owner of Monksilver Nursery. Joe has worked with Myddelton House Gardens for many years, discovering some of the hybrids named after EA Bowles and continuing to celebrate Bowles’ detailed knowledge of snowdrops and passion for spring bulbs.

Julia Bigham, head gardener at Myddelton House Gardens, said: “We look forward to welcoming visitors from across the country and further afield to our Ultimate Snowdrop Sale this January. Whether you’re a seasoned collector or a newcomer, you’ll be captivated by the beauty of these flowers as you explore the extensive range on sale and find the perfect addition to your garden.

“We hope visitors also take the opportunity to attend our snowdrop lecture and head into the wider gardens to explore at this magical time of year.”

The Ultimate Snowdrop Sale takes place this Saturday (25th) from 10.30am-12pm and admission is £5 per person. Tickets to the lecture at 1.30pm cost £7 and can be booked in advance:
