Imagine a shop that spends its profits on good causes, similar to a charity shop but with the money only benefiting your community instead of being returned to a national charity.

Do you believe certain social issues can be addressed more efficiently locally, rather than through huge national organisations? With profits delivered directly to a local cause rather than being filtered through the large overheads of a big organisation?

This is the basis of our new community interest company (CIC) shop, Philanthropy London, which has recently opened in Green Lanes, Palmers Green. Our business model is to return profits in the form of wages, for up to eight hours work per week in the shop, to adults suffering from mental health issues or who have learning disabilities.

Not everyone can fulfil a complete job description, but we believe everyone can do something of value and should have the opportunity to contribute to society through fulfilling employment. As a CIC we are mandated to return greater than 65% of our profits to our chosen community, which is the borough of Enfield.

Our goal is to create a destination shop selling a great selection of curated, pre-loved adult clothing, homeware and upcycled furniture in a bright, spacious and upbeat environment. Since opening the shop on 2nd June we have received overwhelmingly positive feedback from customers, both regarding the shopping experience and our business model.

We’ve also partnered with the equalities team at Enfield Council which helps people with learning disabilities to find voluntary and paid positions, and we have made a good start at growing our volunteer team and in receiving donations.

If you are interested in expanding your shopping options and supporting a local initiative that benefits your community, come and check us out at 248 Green Lanes, follow us on social media, and think of us when you make a donation.

If you are also interested in volunteering for whatever reason – perhaps you are a whizz at marketing, social media, love clothes and merchandising, or are looking to learn new skills and meet new people – then pop into the shop to find out more!

Independent news outlets like ours – reporting for the community without rich backers – are under threat of closure, turning British towns into news deserts.

The audiences they serve know less, understand less, and can do less.

If our coverage has helped you understand our community a little bit better, please consider supporting us with a monthly, yearly or one-off donation.
