Station house set to be demolished

The building at Enfield Lock Station has remained unused for several years, reports Joe Ives, Local Democracy Reporter

A “redundant and deteriorating” building at Enfield Lock Station looks set to be demolished.

The dilapidated two-storey house currently sits next to platform two on the western side of the Greater Anglia station, having been boarded up and unused since 2018.

In a recent planning report, an officer at Enfield Council said that “the building is a redundant and deteriorating structure located in a high-risk position adjacent to live railway operations”.

Earlier this month, the local authority formally gave the green light to the proposals, saying no planning permission was required. This followed an application sent to the council in February this year.

Located in the north-east of the borough, Enfield Lock Station is on the West Anglia Main Line, providing commuters a direct route into Liverpool Street Station, located eleven miles to the south.

Council officers say the station house demolition at Enfield Lock “can be carried out within a short timeframe with limited impact of noise disturbance and with sufficient means to minimise dust exposure”.

The process, they say, will involve a mixture of machine work and manually dismantling more dangerous components.

When complete, the empty space will be restored by Greater Anglia to “a safe, level, compacted formation” with secure fencing reinstated.

It is not yet clear when the works will take place.
