One of The Enfield Society’s longest-serving members and former chairs has died aged 91, the charity has announced.

Monica Smith MBE first joined The Enfield Society in 1976 and had most recently been joint president since 2018, having previously been its chair between 2001 and 2005. She was also a former treasurer and had served on the management committee continuously between 1992 and 2015.

Monica, who lived for many years in Holly Walk, was also known as an author who wrote numerous books and pamphlets about local history, including Heritage Walks in the London Borough of Enfield and The Enfield Book 2017: A Young Explorer’s Guide.

Dave Cockle, The Enfield Society’s current chair, said: “Monica had a long and distinguished involvement with the society.

“She was a member of our management committee from 1992 to 2015 and served as chair from 2001 to 2005. She also acted as treasurer for a number of years.

“She became Joint President, with Colin Pointer, in 2018 and continued to provide us with the benefit of her experience until shortly before her death.

“She was a wonderful model of commitment to the heritage and environment of Enfield and will be much missed.”
