Charity Parkinson’s UK is now helping to fund gym-based sessions for people suffering from the disease at the refurbished facility
The gym at Southgate Leisure Centre unveiled its new look this week after a major £750,000 refurbishment which aims to provide a “truly inclusive user experience”.
The gym has been refitted with new state-of-the art gym equipment which features the latest technology to ensure users’ safety, paramount for those with balance and stability concerns, such as Parkinson’s sufferers and seniors.
The community team at the leisure centre was successful in securing £3,000 in funding from charity Parkinson’s UK to provide gym-based sessions for people suffering from the disease.
The refurbishment also includes a new and improved layout of resistance equipment and functional fitness areas, which will allow specialist sessions to be scheduled alongside regular sessions.
The major refurbishment – which started in June – also includes replacement of all equipment and a full redecoration of the gym and studios, as well as a total refurb of the health and fitness changing rooms.
Like the other council-owned leisure centres in Enfield, Southgate has been run by Greenwich Leisure Ltd (GLL) under its ‘Better’ brand since December last year.
Vishal Karia, GLL partnership manager for Enfield, says: “As a charitable social enterprise, we are committed to improving our services in the local community. This extensive refurbishment of Southgate Leisure Centre’s facilities will enhance the user experience for all of our members and help break down barriers to make our offering even more inclusive.”
