The North to South London Trail passes through Enfield, Barnet and Haringey on its way to Carshalton
A new walking route has been launched to encourage people to get off the sofa and take in the sights of North London and South London.
The North London to South London Trail traverses the capital, connecting footpaths, waterways, woods and other green spaces. Out of the total 34-mile route, 75% is off-road.
The first section starts in Cockfosters and then passes through Oak Hill Park, Arnos Park, Broomfield Park and then along the New River before arriving at Alexandra Palace and Highgate Woods.
Subsequent sections of the 34-mile route run between Highgate and Baker Street; Baker Street and Battersea; Battersea and Colliers Wood and Colliers Wood and Carshalton.
The trail is the brainchild of Lucy Maddison and Emily Morrison, who setup a website called Walking Post as “a home for inspiring walking route ideas in Surrey, Kent, London and further afield”.
The North London to South London Trail was launched with a ‘Weekend Walkathon’ last weekend which saw a large group completing the route over three days. Lucy and Emily also performed a ribbon cutting ceremony at Cockfosters to kick-off the event.
Lucy, who designed this latest route, said: “The Walking Post was born out of a love of walking and maps and wanting to share all the routes I had already planned around London and the south-east. The challenge of the North to South Trail was to create a route that goes right through the centre of London but also includes as many green spaces and footpaths as possible.”
Emily added: “London is blessed with an array of green space and unexpected vistas, even when you’re right in the centre and think you’ve seen it all before. Walking is the perfect way to discover all kinds of details you might otherwise miss; we want to make it easy for everyone to explore and enjoy our capital city on foot.”
