Edmonton Leisure Centre will reopen next month for the first time since 2023.

Operator Better, part of Greenwich Leisure Ltd (GLL), confirmed the facility would finally reopen in April after a 16-month closure, although swimmers will have to wait until summer to be able to use the pool.

The centre closed in December 2023 after a series of major maintenance issues were discovered. A multimillion-pound repairs programme has been underway since last autumn when Enfield Council struck a £7.5m deal to fix and upgrade the facility, although it meant the civic centre giving up the lease.

GLL has now installed a new gym, fitness studio and a group cycle studio, with the centre’s sports hall and soft play also set to be reopened. The pool will be opened in the summer.

Vishal Karia, GLL’s partnership manager, said: “We are thrilled to announce that Edmonton Leisure Centre will be reopening in late April 2025, following an extensive refurbishment and essential maintenance work.

“This marks the start of an exciting new chapter for the centre, with fantastic new facilities including a gym with state-of-the-art equipment, fitness class studio, group cycle studio, sports hall and soft play area.

“We look forward to welcoming the local community back to the leisure centre, helping people of all ages meet their health and wellness goals.”

The Dispatch revealed the full extent of the maintenance issues at Edmonton Leisure Centre, which Better inherited from previous operator Fusion in December 2023, when an independent condition report released under the Freedom of Information Act showed that it had been blighted by roof leaks, fire safety failures, broken boilers, cracked concrete, worn-out lifts, exhausted ventilation systems, flooded basements and bursting sewage pipes.

The exact date of the centre’s reopening will be confirmed next week.
