Kate Osamor has been officially reinstated as a Labour MP in the House of Commons following a three-month suspension.

The Edmonton MP was suspended by Labour in January for stating in a newsletter to constituents that Israel’s attacks on Gaza should be added to a list of genocides remembered on Holocaust Memorial Day.

Osamor, who has represented Edmonton since 2015, later apologised for the comments. After learning that her suspension would now be lifted following a Labour Party investigation, she said: “I am grateful to the Labour Party for their investigation into my conduct and I accept the outcome in full.

“I want to unreservedly apologise again for my comments. I made remarks which were insensitive, inappropriate, and which I apologise for and regret.

“I will continue to reach out to Jewish stakeholders and the community. I am committed to ensuring that I don’t fall short of the highest standards. I look forward to continuing to represent my constituents of Edmonton in Westminster as a Labour MP.”

Osamor’s return means Enfield once again has three Labour MPs, with Enfield Southgate MP Bambos Charalambous also having his suspension ended last month. Both had continued to serve their constituents as independent MPs during their time away from Labour.

In February, shortly after her suspension, Edmonton and Winchmore Hill Constituency Labour Party passed a motion of ‘no confidence’ in Osamor which stated Labour members in Edmonton “strongly condemn” her Gaza comments and said it was “deliberately hurtful towards our Jewish community”.

However, Osamor’s return to Labour means she is now set to stand for re-election as the constituency’s Labour candidate in the upcoming general election, expected between now and the end of the year.
