Sirwan Food Centre in Hertford Road was ordered to pay back nearly £800 to two workers paid below the minimum wage in 2020

A mini-supermarket in Edmonton is among 74 businesses in London being named and shamed by the government for previously failing to pay its employees the minimum wage.
Sirwan Food Centre in Hertford Road was ordered by His Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) to pay back a total of £798.22 to two workers who were paid below the minimum wage between April and September 2020.
Across the UK, 518 employers have been ordered to repay workers over £7.4million after nearly 60,000 workers were left out of pocket.
All the businesses named have since paid back what they owe to their staff and faced financial penalties of up to 200% of their underpayment. The investigations by HMRC looked back at staff wages paid between between 2015 and 2022.
Employment rights minister Justin Madders said: “There is no excuse for employers to undercut their workers, and we will continue to name companies who break the law and don’t pay their employees what they are owed.
“Ensuring workers have the support they need and making sure they receive a fair day’s pay for a fair day’s work is a key commitment in our Plan for Change. This will put more money in working people’s pockets, helping to boost productivity and ending low pay.”
Any workers who suspect they are being underpaid can visit gov.uk/checkyourpay to find out more about what they can do. The minimum wage law applies to all parts of the UK and has recently been increased by the government, from £11.44 to £12.21 for those aged over 21 years.
