Enfield-based drag queen Sissy Lea has been announced as part of the cast of an Italian reality show based on the popular Ru Paul’s Drag Race series.

Sissy Lea has been a well-known performer around Enfield for many years and the drag name is a play on words that pays homage to her origins of Sicily, while also being a nod to her adoptive home near the River Lea.

Sissy Lea is the creation of Massimo Malluzzo, known by many as the former owner of a famous coffee shop in Enfield. The local drag star will now be one of the contestants on Drag Race Italia.

Massimo said: “I first got into drag when I started watching the second season of the US version of Drag Race. Then in 2016 my husband took me to a drag show in Spain and that’s when I decided I wanted to become a drag queen.

“The first thing my husband and I did when we got back from that trip in 2016 was build a stage in our coffee shop. We were able to host the first ever drag show in Enfield.”

Sissy Lea started her career as a drag queen at the age of 40 and wants everyone to know that it is never too late to follow your dreams.

Since then, Sissy Lea has entertained the Enfield community on several occasions, including a sold-out show at Dugdale Theatre in 2019. In 2021, she released her first pop single, Camouflage Veil‘.

“I’m a live singer,” says Sissy Lea, “and by singing I mean I ruin your favourite songs! But I guarantee you will have the best night out at one of my shows.”

Sissy Lea will be competing for the crown on the new season of Drag Race Italia alongside twelve other queens. The season will premiere on Friday 13th October on Paramount+ and WOW Presents Plus.
