A journalist who grew up in Edmonton has been made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the King’s Birthday Honours.

Aditya Chakrabortty is The Guardian‘s senior economics commentator, with his regular columns focusing mainly on the economy and how it impacts society.

The King’s Birthday Honours mark the “extraordinary contributions and service of people across the UK” and Aditya has been made an MBE in recognition of his “services to public understanding of the economy and wider social issues”.

Aditya’s journalism has previously won awards, including a British Journalism Award for ‘comment journalist of the year’ in 2017.

The Oxford University graduate, who continues to live in Enfield borough, said: “I was born and raised in Edmonton and I owe it a lot.

“The first person to tell my mum I should become a writer was a teacher at Galliard [Primary School] and the librarians at Haselbury and Fore Street were my early idols.

“I am delighted to receive this recognition for my writing, especially as one of the questions I often raise is how to give the children growing up in a place like Edmonton today the chances and encouragement I was lucky enough to have. Here’s to more libraries, more teachers and safer streets.”
