An Enfield man has become the latest to be convicted as part of an “extensive investigation” into the unlawful accessing and sale of personal information.

William Chipoma, aged 35 and of The Ridgeway, was charged after the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) investigation uncovered his involvement in the theft and sale of personal data within the claims management sector.

Enquiries revealed that Chipoma deliberately sought employment with the intention of stealing and selling personal data.

He illegally accessed records and sold personal data between 2015 and 2017, receiving payments totalling £70,550. Chipoma was also charged with two offences under the Computer Misuse Act 1990 and two under Section 55 of the Data Protection Act 1998.

Chipoma was sentenced at Minshull Street Crown Court yesterday (Wednesday 11th) after pleading guilty at a previous hearing. He was handed a ten-month prison sentence, suspended for twelve months, as well as being ordered to complete 240 hours of unpaid work.

It brings the total number of individuals prosecuted by the ICO as part of the case to ten. It is the largest nuisance call investigation the body has ever conducted.
