The community organisations have teamed up to help out older people in poverty following government’s axe to universal winter fuel payments

An alliance of community groups in Enfield have stepped up to provide small fuel grants for vulnerable pensioners this winter.
Heart of Enfield Mosque (HEM), Residents Action Committee (RAC) and Enfield Community Action Group (ECAG) launched the local initiative to distribute a total of £500 to those in need, with £25 fuel grants available for individuals deemed eligible.
Speaking about the new initiative, Salim Ahmed, chair of HEM, said: “The Heart of Enfield Mosque is committed to serve the community within Enfield and we hope this winter fuel initiative will bring welcome assistance to pensioners in need in the Borough as well as being the start of similar ventures in the future.”
Commenting on the current difficulties pensioners face, Shirin Ford of RAC said: “The withdrawal of the winter fuel allowance has impacted pensioners just above the pension credit threshold who are, now, no longer eligible for the benefit.
“At RAC we provide free advice for those struggling with debt, employment and housing issues and these £25 winter fuel grants will provide much needed help for those having to choose between heating and eating.”
Khalid Sadur, founder of ECAG, added: “A community which does not look after its neighbours and those in
need, is not a real community. We are delighted to work in association with HEM and RAC in providing compassion and understanding to those who require it most during these cold winter months.”
Applicants for the £25 fuel grants are asked to visit the RAC website here or call Shirin on 07850 579 515.
