Enfield residents living near upgraded electricity pylons set to get £250 bills discount

Residents in Enfield Island Village likely to be among those to benefit from government scheme

Residents living within 500 metres of newly-upgraded electricity pylons – likely including hundreds of people in Enfield – are set to benefit from energy bill discounts.

The government today (Wednesday 12th) confirmed that those living near 43 transmission projects across the UK will be eligible for the payments for up to ten years under its new “pounds for pylons” bill discount scheme.

Major upgrade schemes are underway as part of the effort to connect more renewable power projects to the National Grid and improve the UK’s energy security.

One of these is the North London Reinforcement (NLR) project, which is improving connections between Hertfordshire and Hackney, via eastern Enfield and Tottenham.

While most of this route of pylons passes through industrial areas, such as the Brimsdown business estate where Enfield Power Station is situated, it also cuts through the middle of Enfield Island Village.

This means that residents living on the island should be eligible to receive the £250-a-year energy bills discount.

A small number of residents in Enfield Lock, Brimsdown and Edmonton may also be eligible.

In today’s announcement, the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero explained: “The government believes that where communities live close to this vital infrastructure, they should directly benefit from it.

“The Bill Discount Scheme is a government scheme that will give eligible households £250 a year off their electricity bills for ten years. It is for households living within 500 metres of new or significantly upgraded electricity transmission infrastructure, such as pylons.

“Payments for eligible projects under the scheme are expected to start in the first half of 2027.”

It added that people’s eligibility for the scheme will “begin being confirmed in the first half of 2027 for projects that have started construction”.

No action from residents is needed, as most eligible households will “automatically receive the discount” or will otherwise be contacted directly.

The government points out that the current electricity grid was designed for the fossil fuel era, when most power came from coal and gas-fired power stations, but with renewable sources such as wind and solar now accounting for over half of the UK’s electricity supply, major upgrades are needed.

Demand for electricity is also rising rapidly thanks to the proliferation of electric vehicles and large data centres.

National Grid says that its NLR project is about “modernising substations that have been in use for over 60 years and doubling the capacity of existing overhead lines between Pelham and Hackney”.

It adds: “This will allow more home-grown electricity, including cleaner and more affordable sources, to flow through the network, strengthening energy security and supporting growing demand.

“Projects like NLR focus on reinforcing the existing network, allowing more energy to flow through the system and supporting the UK’s transition to a cleaner and more secure energy future. The project will support growing demand for power across North London and surrounding areas.”
